ADNOC Becomes the First Energy Company to Deploy OpenAI Frontier in Deal With G42

ADNOC, OpenAI and G42 have signed a multi-year deal to deploy OpenAI Frontier across ADNOC's energy operations, the first deployment of its kind by an energy company.

ADNOC has signed a multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42 to deploy OpenAI Frontier across its energy operations. The agreement was signed at ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi on 2 November 2026, with G42 participating through its subsidiary Inception42.

ADNOC is the first company in the energy sector to deploy OpenAI Frontier. Frontier is OpenAI’s enterprise platform for building, deploying and managing AI agents, launched on 5 February.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman was in Abu Dhabi for ADIPEC and met His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. Sheikh Khaled witnessed the signing.

Two applications go first

The partnership starts with two applications. The first turns field master planning into a single integrated decision, replacing separate subsurface, facilities and economic studies, and prepares full-field plans in hours rather than months.

OpenAI reasoning models will work through decades of data covering thousands of wells, multiple stacked reservoirs and hundreds of surface facilities, alongside capital and commercial factors. The second application values every barrel of oil while it is still underground.

Interconnected agents will continuously forecast crude supply, demand, prices and margins across ADNOC’s integrated operations. ADNOC says no other energy company uses the technology this way.

Built on GPT models and UAE infrastructure

The systems combine OpenAI’s GPT models with ADNOC’s proprietary industrial data and expertise. They run on G42’s sovereign AI infrastructure in the UAE, with in-country inference.

Human experts keep oversight of consequential decisions. ADNOC says the arrangement keeps its proprietary data and critical infrastructure protected.

The partnership also covers cybersecurity through OpenAI’s Daybreak Blue initiative, which helps security teams find vulnerabilities and protect critical energy infrastructure. The partners will also train ADNOC’s workforce to deploy and use the new systems.

The next frontier of AI is not simply doing things faster. It is making possible what was previously beyond reach.

Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO.

Abu Dhabi and the UAE are setting a bold, global standard for AI integration across both the public and private sectors to make sure the benefits of AI reach everyone.

Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI.

Altman described the deal as a first-of-its-kind partnership. He said energy is one of the challenges OpenAI faces, and its most advanced models would take on ADNOC’s hardest, most valuable problems.

One of four Abu Dhabi deals signed the same day

The ADNOC agreement was one of four agreements between Abu Dhabi entities and OpenAI signed on 2 November. The Abu Dhabi government and OpenAI launched a Machine-Readable Government initiative, which turns policies and regulations into a format AI systems can read.

Its first pilot is already running with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority and focuses on food imports. Officials keep oversight, with accountability for final decisions.

Mubadala, Inception42 and OpenAI signed a separate agreement to apply AI to investment analysis, opportunity identification and risk assessment. Inception42 and OpenAI also signed a five-year agreement to support frontier AI across government, enterprise and education in the UAE.

A longer Abu Dhabi relationship

G42 and OpenAI first partnered in October 2023 to apply generative AI across financial services, energy, healthcare and public services. ADNOC and G42 agreed a joint venture in 2019 to develop AI products for oil and gas, later named AIQ and owned 60 percent by ADNOC and 40 percent by G42.

In May 2025 the two companies joined Oracle, Nvidia, SoftBank and Cisco in Stargate UAE. The 1-gigawatt cluster sits inside the 5-gigawatt UAE-US AI Campus in Abu Dhabi, with the first 200 megawatts expected to go live in 2026.

Abu Dhabi has also invested in OpenAI, with MGX among the co-leads of a $122 billion funding round that closed on 31 March at an $852 billion post-money valuation.

Why ADNOC is moving now

ADNOC already runs ChatGPT Enterprise for more than 40,000 employees, the largest enterprise deployment of ChatGPT in the Middle East and North Africa, with adoption above 97 percent. It also counts more than 200 AI applications and 70 robotics use cases deployed or under development.

Frontier connects that existing intelligence across the business instead of adding another standalone tool. Its existing ENERGYai platform already builds deep intelligence on reservoirs, assets and operations, and Frontier links those decisions from the well to the market.

No financial value or deployment timetable was disclosed, so the test is delivery rather than the signing itself. The two initial applications are where that delivery will first be visible.

Al Jaber set the deal in a wider argument at the ADIPEC opening. He said nearly one billion barrels have been drained from inventories since the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, diesel stocks in some markets are at their lowest seasonal level in 35 years, and logistics have risen from under 5 percent to over 30 percent of the cost of a barrel.

His point was that energy security is now measured at delivery as much as at production. He held up the OpenAI and G42 collaboration as the kind of partnership that makes energy systems smarter, safer, more secure and more productive.
