RTA Adds Four New Fourth-Generation Abras to Dubai’s Marine Transport Fleet

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has added four new fourth-generation traditional abras to its marine fleet, each carrying 24 passengers with digital screens, electronic destination boards and designated areas for People of Determination.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has expanded its marine transport network with four new fourth-generation traditional abras. The boats were developed to the latest approved technical specifications and designs for the model.

The fourth-generation design, which RTA introduced on 17 February 2025, raised capacity to 24 passengers, up from 20 on the earlier abras. RTA says the new boats will make marine transport more appealing and drive greater use across Dubai’s public transport network.

Each new abra has been designed to the highest approved engineering and technical standards, in full compliance with the health and safety requirements of the Dubai Universal Design Code. The boats have also secured certificates of conformity with applicable regulations and safety requirements under the relevant Gulf Standard Specifications.

RTA has also rolled out a package of operational and service improvements for passengers. These include upgraded seating and flooring designs, more efficient use of interior space, and designated areas for People of Determination.

“The introduction of the new abras builds on RTA’s ongoing efforts to develop marine transport services and improve their operational efficiency, offering an integrated, more comfortable, and safer passengers travel experience. This aligns with RTA’s strategy to deliver innovative and sustainable mobility solutions that keep pace with Dubai’s rapid growth.”

The new abras carry smart systems and modern technologies designed to improve the journey and raise service quality. Digital screens show real-time information and safety and awareness content, while electronic destination boards, a first for the fourth-generation model, let passengers read operational information clearly and easily.

“Each new abra accommodates 24 passengers and has been designed to the highest approved engineering and technical standards, in full compliance with the health and safety requirements of the Dubai Universal Design Code. This ensures a safe and comfortable travel environment that caters to the needs of all segments of society.”

Heritage boats, modern systems

The upgrade keeps the traditional abra and changes what is inside it. Capacity is up from 20 to 24, the interior is rebuilt around access, and the boats now carry the digital screens and destination boards that earlier abras did not have.

It is a small addition, four boats, but it lands on the part of the network where heritage and daily commuting meet. RTA frames it as part of a wider push toward an integrated and sustainable transport network for the emirate.
